Trauma from abuse can last a lifetime.  Those who are
abused as children often lock the memory away; it is
too psychologically overwhelming to face. But the
body remembers. And so do the hidden corners of the
mind. The abuse can also affect all
relationships.
If you are being abused (or suspect you are),  I strongly recommend
counseling. If you know (or suspect) of a child or a vulnerable adult
who is being abused, report it. In most cases your name will not be
revealed to the abuser and you may save a life.
If you know or suspect that you were abused in the
past, seek
counseling.  This is especially important
if the abuser is still in a position to abuse others.
